What is Self-Adhesive Vinyl made from?In basic terms it comprises a thin layer of flexible PVC coated with an adhesive and lined with a silicon coated paper, however there are many variations and grades of sticky back plastic available. See our further reading section for more details.
how to put sticky back plastic on a book
An earlier question, How can I laminate with contact paper without leaving bubbles?, asked about covering books with adhesive contact paper, presumably to provide some protection. The image in the question was of clear adhesive plastic film sold for the purpose of protecting paper documents, books, etc. The specific example shown was a product called Transpaseal, which is described as:
The plastic itself shouldn't be an issue for acidity, and common glues, apart from bone glue, can easily be acid-free. If the glue was acidic I'd expect to show quite clearly by now where it's in contact with white paper. A couple of textbooks from only 25 hears ago don't show this, and the plastic may even have been from the same roll.
If you want to protect a book that means that it has value to you. There are books that clearly need protection, like textbooks from elementary school. Although they can be reused and preserved, they also have a "limited" life expectancy. Adhesive plastic has clear advantages and will really protect the book from liquids as well as general wear and tear.
I covered all my art books (soft and hardcovers) with non-adhesive plastic and very small pieces of tape, not pasted on the book, but on the plastic itself so the plastic covers fit like a "sock." After many years, the tape shrank a bit leaving a small line of glue. The plastic is now dull, but the books are, as I intended, protected.
Mix just a pinch of each to form a paste, then scrub the sticky plastic item with bare hands. It worked like a charm. Avoid the impulse to reach for a green scrub pad, because that will scratch the plastic.
I probably used less than a teaspoon of baking soda to clean the back of this hard plastic remote control. It took me about 10 minutes to get the whole thing cleared. You can see it in action here on the right side (below).
Thanks for the advice and comments as it all led me to my solution. I use Goo Gone wipes for scrapbooking to remove sticky tape and glue from tools. I decided to try them first. I used a wipe for each remote. One fireplace and one fan. I was done in less then two minutes cleaning both. The fan remote had been sticky for three years. I am so happy to finally get them clean.
Self-adhesive plastic sheet, known in the United Kingdom as sticky-backed plastic, is wide plastic sheet or film with an adhesive layer on one side, used as a surface coating for decorative purposes. It is typically smooth and shiny, but can also come in textured varieties, in which case it can sometimes be used as a cheap alternative to veneer. The plastic is often PVC. The sheeting is typically sold with a removable paper release liner to prevent it from adhering prematurely.
Self-adhesive vinyl sheet was introduced to the UK market in the 1960s under the brand name Fablon.[1] It was extensively used in DIY at the time,[2] and notably featured in children's DIY projects on the British TV show Blue Peter, but always under the generic name "sticky-backed plastic."[3][4]
Iron on vinyl, on the other hand, has a shiny clear plastic carrier sheet on one side and the colorful matte back of the iron on vinyl on the other. You should not be able to peel back the iron on vinyl from the plastic sheet easily.
Thanks for the info. I use a lightup board that I bought to go under the canvas which helps a great seeing the symbols. I peel only a little of the plastic covering back and work in that area. I usually start in the corner on the right side of the canvas as my hand then is on the covering and work to the left. I am right handed. When done. I roll the plastic covering back over it, lay it flat and put a large book over it to secure diamonds. When finished. I keep the plastic covering over it flat with a book on it until I get it framed. I save all my diamonds from my kits and combine the same colors in 1 vial. I also bought the tic tac jars container to keep my tools and dots together and organized. I have done around a dozen of these. Fun and relaxing to do.
Hi, I have an old album that has those sticky plastic on the front of ever pages. How do I scan the pics without destroying the pictures? Which scanner would you recommend? Thank you for you help in advance!
I laughed when I saw that our library covered your book in plastic. Actually, having the plastic coated library book titled Plastic Free, with me has been a great conversation starter with total strangers, including with the local library staff. A lot of people seem plastic-free-curious and just needed something like seeing an oxymoron in action to get them motivated to learn more.
@Shona LALA dex press Yea unfortunately everyone is experiencing this same issue when borrowing Plastic Free from the library. I understand why libraries need to protect their books, just wish there was a plastic free alternative that all libraries used.
I just put a hold on your book at the Seattle Public Library. They have nine copies with a waiting list, Yay! I am pretty sure your book will have a plastic protective cover, and while it is disappointing, I really do get it. I hope your books at my library will be read by many many people and i am looking forward to reading it.
Contrary to a popular misconception, mounting photos is not a complicated process when you are armed with the right tools, materials and information. We often encounter clients who are seeking the safest and most reliable way to mount their photographs so they can be safely preserved and easy to view. This has inspired us to create stunning and easy to use photo albums in the style of traditional bound books. We specialize in designing unique and beautiful albums that allow for traditional photo mounting. Most albums feature plastic and other built in ways to insert photos. We offer photo albums that are perfect for traditional mounting because they are made with heavy paper stock pages which are ideal to use when attaching photographs. Our albums also have 3/4" wide tabs between every page of the album.
You can make one without making a mess by using clear sticky back plastic/self-adhesive instead of glue. Cut a square and peel off the backing. Your child can then place their collage items onto the sticky side of the film. Cover their artwork with a backing (you could use the original backing paper, another piece of paper or another piece of clear sticky back plastic) and press firmly.
Good advice overall. Acetone is compatible with polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene and polypropylene. These are all flexible plastics, and can be identified by recycling resin codes. A cloth works best to contain the glue as it is not broken down and remains sticky after acetone evaporates. Acetone will strip, soften and smear paint and enamel substitues. I've had success using ethanol on ABS (fridge, remote control), and WD-40 on Acrylic (very fragile plastic). Light glues that are under the entire label on jars and coffee foils can be "melted" in soap or scrubbed down with soda (all of them), the lumps of heavy glue usually cannot. The paper may need to be scratched if it is waterproof.
Heat transfer vinyl, also known as, iron-on vinyl, t-shirt vinyl or HTV, is a special type of vinyl that can adhere to fabric. This is different than adhesive vinyl sheets and rolls, that are sticky from the onset. The adhesive on the vinyl is activated with heat. This vinyl comes in sheets, rolls and packs. When you receive your vinyl, there is a front and a back. The front side is the shiny side- that shiny layer is the carrier sheet which you can peel off after you've ironed your project. The back side is the matte side, and that is the side you will cut when you create your design. It is also the side that has the heat-activated adhesive.
DO NOT attach labels in a plastic document wallets (except official reinforced Send My Bag label holders) using string, cable ties, staples, pins, or by simply running tape around the edge of the label. These methods are not secure and it is extremely easy for labels attached in this way to fall off during transit. Labels should also not be attached to luggage using sticky back document wallets, while these are suitable for attaching labels to cardboard boxes, they are not suitable for attaching labels to luggage. 2ff7e9595c
